When a schoolboy is asked about water, almost always, he would casually blurt out the no-nonsense truth that “water is colourless!” The remark, in fact, is a universal validation of what water is! As one advances in years, this straightforward truth about water is quietly shelved to the periphery. In its instance, the more charming and emotive quality of water—its visuality, however formless, alongside its fluidity or its flowing and reflective power—gushes generously!
The acquiescence becomes more enviable if that erstwhile ten-year-old is a visual artist and a painter. Such is the very context in SIX EASY PIECES: Where the Water’s Flow Leads the Artist, the 4th solo exhibition of new works by Jay Lozada.
All six pieces are purposively crafted and created for this exhibit as a paean to Water, one of the four elements of nature as espoused by Greek Classical philosophy, alongside Air, Earth, and Fire, which enable our world to function in such a most orderly, if not perfect, fusion.
The flowing and filling power of water fully cascades in this exhibit. The one-to-one correspondence between the images and their titles—Undercurrent, Onda, Oil Spill, Stream, Water Canon, Breakwater—reflects Lozada’s cognizance of this oft-taken-for-granted natural element. This exhibition is Lozada’s simple invitation for everyone to quaff into the refreshing potency of water, not simply to quench thirst but stimulate the senses!
