A longtime supporter of Filipino artists, West Gallery has the aim and mission to nurture the work and practice of Filipino contemporary artists. For this showcase, the gallery has joined together the work of 26 of the country’s best emerging and established artists, many of whom started their artistic careers at the gallery. With this presentation, West Gallery creates an avenue for these artists to create work that is true and meaningful to them, allowing for a display of a wide range of voices and approaches to making art.

The gallery’s mission has always been to encourage the growth of artists finding their footing and their voice, and nurturing these different styles and perspectives, creating a comprehensive picture of the contemporary Filipino artist and, perhaps, their place in the art world. Through supporting their practice, the gallery has always aimed to create a path to longevity and development within an industry that remains precarious and unstable.

There is no one way of creating Filipino art, and there is no criteria that makes art “Filipino” other than the fact that the artist is. This exhibition is a celebration of these different voices, and presents evidence of the beauty that can be made when artists are able to just freely create. West Gallery’s exhibition is a capsule of the artists that have helped, all of them from different backgrounds, paths, and trajectories. Free from any thematic underpinning or specific brief, the show spotlights the kind of work these artists want to make if they were given free reign to make anything.
